YFU congratulates YFU Community College Program student Pei (Joe) Zhou of China top scorer for the 2012-2013 American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) Mathematics League Competition.

Nationwide Math Competition Results Announced

Results of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) Mathematics League Competition were announced by team advisor Mike Bartlett, Associate Professor of Mathematics at UW-Marinette at the annual Awards Banquet held May 10 at UW-Marinette.

The Student Mathematics League was founded in 1970 by Nassau Community College in New York. In 1981 the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges assumed sponsorship of the competition. This year 228 Colleges nation-wide competed. This included colleges ranging in student populations from over 20,000 to campuses the size of UW-Marinette with a student population of 461. “This is the eighth year that UW-Marinette has entered a team. Again this year there was some stiff competition,” said Bartlett. “A total of 25 students on our campus participated in at least one round of the competition. We congratulate all these students who participated either in the fall or spring round of the competition.”

In the second round held in the spring semester, the UW-Marinette team ranked 73rd nation-wide moving up 48 positions from 2012. Also, in round 2 UW-Marinette ranked 9th out of 35 schools in the Midwest region. UW-Marinette finished in 121st position overall nationwide and 19th overall in the Midwest region.

The UW-Marinette 5 top scorers for 2012-2013 from all students who completed at least one round of the competition are Ryne Hass of Marinette, Allison Finnell of Crivitz, Ryan Nelson of Marinette, Tara Hansen of Menominee, and Pei (Joe) Zhou of China. The top scorer for the 2012-2013 competition was Zhou who was awarded the Farmers & Merchants cash prize of $100 by Tom Maxwell, bank president.
