5K FUN RUN BENEFITS YFU USA
On July 31, runners and walkers from around Washington, DC gathered for a 5K fun run to benefit YFU USA. More than 160 participants completed the course on that Saturday morning. Michael Wardian, 36, of Arlington, Virginia took first place among male runners with a time of 16 minutes and 12 seconds; Elizabeth Young, 30, of Washington, DC placed first among females with a time of 18 minutes and 59 seconds. Prizes were awarded by age with medals given to top male and female runners in their teens, twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, and sixties. Of note, YFU Southeast Field Director Chandlee Lewis placed first in her age bracket, receiving a commemorative medal. The results were published the following day in The Washington Post.
The event was organized by YFU USA volunteers Andrew Towne and Eleonor Gonzalez. Andrew, Eleonor, and their team of volunteers helped set the course, solicit donations, and arrange for official timekeeping. Several local businesses donated money, food, and bottled
water for the event. In addition, the Arlington Police Department donated manpower and provided escorts to direct traffic, ensuring that runners safely crossed a major intersection. All participants received official t-shirts showcasing the YFU logo. In total, more than $5,000 was raised to benefit YFU USA programs.
