Youth For Understanding (YFU) advances intercultural understanding, mutual respect, and social responsibility through educational exchanges for youth, families and communities. The global YFU network, consisting of partners in more than 70 different countries, is united by the belief that full cultural immersion is the most effective means to gain the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly multicultural, interconnected and competitive global society. Selected to administer more government and corporate scholarships than any other high school exchange program, YFU has remained a trusted leader of intercultural exchange programs for more than 65 years because of its commitment to safety, reputation for quality, and exceptional support services.
Purpose of Position
The long-term objective of YFU and youth exchange is to engage young people in personal development opportunities that will increase their leadership capacity and improve international understanding and public diplomacy. The role of the Host Family Recruiter is to identify volunteer host families who are willing to open their homes and share their traditions with an international student. As an independent contractor, Host Family Recruiters have the ability to determine the number of hours necessary to fulfill student placement objectives. Host Family Recruiters are not required or expected to support exchange students or host families after placements have been made.
Host Family Recruiter opportunities are available in communities throughout the U.S. The ideal candidate would be an individual who is engaged with members of their local community, and through a variety of activities, can perform outreach to identify and recruit families to provide homes to incoming exchange students.
Training required for this position includes:
- Completion of a YFU host family application to gain knowledge on how to assist host family applicants in their application process (time commitment 1 hour or less)
- Review of the YFU placement handbook to gain critical knowledge needed to facilitate qualified placements. (time commitment 2 hours or less)
- Review YFU’s study guide for the US Department of State Local Coordinator Training & Certification Exam to gain critical knowledge of J-1 visa regulations for secondary school placements
WORK ACTIVITY AND COMPENSATION:
The amount of Host Family Recruitment required for the study abroad placement cycle is dependent on the number of inbound students in an available pool selected for placement by YFU. The schedule of performance concludes either with the permanent placement of all open students in this pool, or with the annual Department of State deadline for host family identification.
For each placement, payment to the independent contractor will be 50% at finalization ($375) of initial placement, and the other 50% would be paid after the student arrives and has remained with the family for 10 weeks.
The Host Family Recruiter position requires strong public speaking skills, community connections, and a willingness and ability to identify, track and engage (via phone, email and in person) leads to successful completion of application materials. To be successful, the Host Family Recruiter must possess full knowledge of the YFU placement handbook and be able to successfully identify parents who will commit to hosting an exchange student.
Experience with recruitment, sales, networking, communication, and outreach experience are assets for this role.
