Youth For Understanding (YFU) advances intercultural understanding, mutual respect and social responsibility through educational exchanges for youth, families and communities. Through the exchange experience, YFU participants gain intercultural understanding, learn mutual respect, and develop a sense of social responsibility. Their experience abroad gives them leadership competencies necessary to meet the challenges and benefit from the opportunities of a fast-changing global community.
Purpose of Position:
The Volunteer Program Coordinator (VPC) assists the Sr. Manager of Volunteer Programs and Recruitment (SMVPR) and the Volunteer Program Manager (VPM) in supporting YFU’s national mission, enhancing its volunteer programs, and enriching the overall volunteer experience through engagement and training. The VPC, in collaboration with the VPM, is accountable for all the volunteer recruitment needs of his/her assigned region. The VPC is a creative, innovative, and motivated individual who works to build a robust network of volunteers, develop creative community based strategies to generate new volunteers leads, and assists the SMVPR and VPM in the delivery of a national volunteer engagement and retention plan. VPCs represent the national organization as ambassadors for the YFU mission to all active and future volunteers.
Generate all volunteer inquiries in an assigned region by promoting opportunities and networking within local businesses, communities, universities/colleges, national volunteer marketing tools, and among YFU stakeholders. Increase awareness of and commitment to the YFU volunteer program.
Create and deploy innovative strategies to recruit volunteers on a regional and community level, using input provided by each Field Director.
Work in each region, in collaboration with the Field Director, to create a reliable network of “recruitment” volunteers to promote the YFU volunteer experience in local communities.
Develop a strategy and outreach plan in an assigned region to maintain recruitment levels for all volunteer categories: area representatives, study abroad, and orientations using a nationally developed requisition system, maintained by the VPM, to track progress.
Manage the initial screening interviews from volunteer inquiries and leads. Recruit, screen, and conduct interviews with candidates to identify their interests, availability, and commitment. Assist volunteers with the application and on-boarding process.
Schedule and/or conduct an introductory/orientation training for new volunteers by phone, online, or in person providing a clear understanding of organizational standards, procedures, and regulations as they relate to the specific volunteer responsibilities.
Ensure that new and experienced volunteers are referred and assigned tasks according to the needs of the organization and skills and interests of the volunteers.
Maintain accurate records to track that active volunteers are in compliance with annual YFU and regulatory requirements and all volunteer training.
Ensure that all newly on-boarded volunteers are introduced and welcomed by their local YFU volunteer community members. Oversee the matching of new volunteers with seasoned mentors.
Supervise assigned interns or volunteers (national office, home-based, or other YFU offices) to ensure that training needs are met and the experience is positive and rewarding for the intern or volunteer.
Assist in special projects at the direction of the SMVPR as assigned.
Backup technical support for volunteer website login and Department of State TrainCaster.
Maintenance of Volunteer Match website referrals.
IT/Systems Liaison to address volunteer IT issues.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Degree with minimum of two years’ experience in volunteer recruitment and marketing; preferably with a non-profit organization.
Working knowledge and experience in recruitment and conducting interviews, preferable.
Demonstrated networking and interpersonal skills, and teamwork orientation.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated writing ability. Public speaking experience helpful. Outgoing, convincing, and personable demeanor. Excellent phone etiquette and communication style to communicate effectively with potential candidates in a professional, knowledgeable and engaging manner.
A self-starter with initiative; creative thinker.
Demonstrated ability to initiate, manage, and follow-through on projects; strong organizational and administrative skills. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team; and with all levels of staff, volunteers and within the community.
Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
Computer proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Able to travel, possess a valid drivers license; and able to work flexible hours
Ability to work nights and weekends during peak season
Ability to learn about, commit to, and educate others on YFU’s mission and goals.
Must be reliable; dependable, flexible and results- and goal-oriented
Ability to stand for long periods of time; walk on occasion for long distances; talking, and hearing skills, and repetitive motions of wrists, hand, and/or fingers. Employee is subject to both environmental conditions: activities occur inside and outdoors. Medium work rating which consists of exerting up to 50 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
