Scott J. Messing is President and CEO of YFU USA. Messing joined the organization in January 2014, and prior to assuming the President & CEO role, held the position of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
President & CEO
Scott J. Messing of Silver Spring, Maryland is the President & CEO of Youth For Understanding USA, assumed the position in January 2017. As a former exchange student and ongoing host father himself, Scott embodies the mission of YFU. He joined the organization in January 2014, and prior to assuming the President & CEO role, held the position of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. In this capacity he oversaw the day-to-day operations of YFU USA, including direct oversight for the Human Resources, Information Technology and Administration, as well as the Education & Training, Support Services, Volunteer Programs, Quality Assurance, and Virtual Exchange departments.
Scott joined YFU from the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), where he served as Chief of Staff and Director of Administration and Association Services for over 8 years. Prior to his time at NAAG, Scott served as a public servant in various capacities for three different Pennsylvania governors, including an appointment as the Deputy Commissioner of Professional Licensing as well as the Deputy Secretary of Administration for the Pennsylvania Department of State. In addition to his non-profit and government experience, Scott practiced law for a small financial services company and served as the Director of Operations and Global Administration for a technology start-up earlier in his career.
Scott spent two semesters at the Universität Heidelberg during his undergraduate education and graduated from Bucknell University with a Bachelor of Arts dual degree in International Relations and German. He received his Juris Doctorate from Pennsylvania State’s Dickinson School of Law with a focus on international law and alternative dispute resolution. In 2016, Scott was appointed to the Alliance for International Exchange Board of Directors. The Alliance is an association of 90 nongovernmental organizations comprising the international educational and cultural exchange community in the United States.
