2019 Japan Pre-Departure Orientation

Welcome to the the 2019 Japan Pre-Departure Orientation (JPDO)! JPDO is a two-session, national orientation for all students going on YFU USA’s 2019 Summer Japan Programs. Participants get to connect with other soon-to-be exchange students and gain valuable information about how to make the most of the exchange experience. Attendance to a JPDO session is mandatory, and YFU will inform students which session they will be attending. Following the end of each session, students will immediately depart to Japan.

Dates and Location

The 2019 JPDO will take place on the campus of North Central College in Naperville, IL. You can find a map of the campus here.

Depending on your Japan program and departure date, you will attend one of two JPDO sessions in late June 2019.

Session 1: June 17-19, 2019 (for Okinawa, Corporate Sponsored, and non-scholarship students)

Session 2: June 21-23, 2019 (For JAFS students)

Session assignments are pre-determined by YFU Japan and travel dates cannot be altered. Students attending Session 1 will arrive in Chicago on June 17th and depart for Japan on June 19th. Students attending Session 2 will arrive in Chicago on June 21st and depart for Japan on June 23rd.

For JPDO, YFU covers the costs of travel, lodging, and food for all students during the orientation. There will be no additional costs to students while attending JPDO, aside from any souvenirs or personal items that students would like to purchase.

JPDO is an informative, fun-filled orientation. It is also your opportunity to connect with other exchange students going to Japan and meet YFU alumni who have traveled to Japan. Expect to have a busy two days on North Central College's campus!

At JPDO, you will:

  • Meet other YFU students from all over the country.

  • Attend informational sessions led by JPDO Volunteer Teachers & Alumni Assistants (recently returned YFU Japan summer program alumni).

  • Participate in informational sessions and activities to prepare you for Japan, including Japanese language and culture lessons.

  • Have the chance to hear first-hand from YFU staff and alumni about their Japanese exchange experience and advice to future students.

  • Participate in Japanese Obon dancing and cultural activities.
