Study in the United Kingdom

In the U.K., accents change noticeably on average every 25 miles!
Which accent will you take on during your exchange?

+ More About the United Kingdom

Visit the United Kingdom and get a taste of beautiful ancient cities, castles, royal gardens, and small villages. Stonehenge, Big Ben, Loch Ness, and Windsor Castle are just some of the incredible sights you may have the chance to explore.

The United Kingdom program gives students a chance to study in England, Wales, or Scotland. Students will be placed in any of these three regions. A land with some of the richest and most dramatic human history, the UK has made significant contributions to the world’s language, technology, culture, and economy. While in the UK, your host family might take you to a barbecue, a local market, or even to the coast, as you will never be too far from the sea! You and your family might eat classic British dishes such as fish and chips, bangers and mash, or shepherd’s pie. You will attend school in the UK and will surely make many new lifelong friends. After school, you and your new friends might play rugby or cricket, two of the most popular sports.

In the land that cultivated historical icons from the Beatles to William Shakespeare to James Bond, you’re sure to take home some incredible character. If you want to explore the rolling hills and romantic coastlines of a country rich with culture, make the United Kingdom your home with YFU!

As a YFU student in the United Kingdom, you’ll live with a local host family and attend a local high school. Part of your experience overseas will be:

School

Students will attend a local private Sixth Form School. Sixth Form is the equivalent of high school in the US and helps prepare students for university. Sixth Form consists of two years, with AS exams after the first year and A-level exams after the second. Students select 3 or 4 subjects of their choice, depending on availability, and will also take a more general subject like critical thinking or extended project qualification. The academic expectations placed on students in the UK are high, so be prepared to study hard!

Orientations

All students applying for the year program must be available for a mandatory 3-day National Pre-Departure Orientation*, which usually takes place in mid-July. This orientation is a required part of the program aimed at preparing students for their experience overseas. All students will participate in a one-day local pre-departure orientation in May or June.

When students arrive in the United Kingdom, they will be joined by other students for a 3-day workshop on cultural and social differences. This arrival camp may be held in Ireland or the UK, and includes cultural acitivies and tours. Students then attend a post-arrival orientation in England within 3-4 weeks of the program’s start date. All orientation costs are included in program tuition.
